At least two people were killed and three others injured in separate mob beating incidents in Gazipur and Jashore districts on Tuesday.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Gazipur reported that one person was killed and three others were seriously injured in a mob beating after they were caught while allegedly trying to steal cows at Ramchandrapur village in Moktarpur union of Kaliganj upazila. 


The deceased was Shanto, 20, son of late Jakir Hossain of Baluchar area under Madhabdi upazila in Narsingdi district.

The injured are all from Kaliganj upazila—Rifat, 19, of Kaliganj sadar; Rubel, 28, of Boktarpur union; and Abdullah, 27, of Tumulia union. They have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in serious condition.

Kaliganj police officer-in-charge Md Alauddin said that local people caught four people on suspicion of cattle theft and beat them up, leaving one dead and three others injured.

He said that the injured were admitted to hospital, while others involved in the incident managed to flee.

Legal action was underway in this connection, the OC added. 

According to the local people, in the early hours of Tuesday, a gang comprising 8–10 men sneaked into the cowshed of Shamsuddin Molla in Ramchandrapur village. Sensing their presence, Shamsuddin started screaming that woke up the villagers who rushed to the mosque and announced the gang’s presence through the public announcement system. Villagers then besieged the gang and caught the four men and severely beat them.  

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Jashore reported that a poultry trader was allegedly beaten to death at Faridpur village under Jashore sadar upazila on Tuesday morning.

The victim was identified as Abu Bakar, 53, of Faridpur village. 

The police and local people said that the trader was declared dead after he was rushed to Jashore General Hospital after allegedly being beaten by Nirmal Kumar and his wife as he went to their residence to collect money after selling poultry. 

Kotwali police officer-in-charge Abul Hasnat Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that two people were detained for quizzing and no case was lodged.

He also said that the motive of the killing was unknown.
