The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Tuesday set July 28 for hearing charges against Begum Rokeya University vice-chancellor Hasibur Rashid Bachchu and 29 others, accused in connection with a crimes against humanity case over killing of Abu Sayeed during 2024 July uprising.

The three-judge tribunal, chaired by retired High Court judge Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, set the schedule and appointed state defence for 24 accused individuals in the case.


On July 1 this year, the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal submitted formal charges against 30 individuals for crimes against humanity in connection with Sayeed鈥檚 murder.

The accused include former Begum Rokeya University vice-chancellor Hasibur Rashid Bachchu, 11 university staff and faculty, eight police officers, one physician, and nine leaders and activists of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League鈥攖he student wing of Awami League.

Among the eight arrested are three university employees鈥攑roctor Shariful Islam, staff members Anwar Parvez Appel and Rafiul Hasan Rasel, two policemen鈥攕ub-inspector Amir Hossain and constable Sujan Chandra Roy, and BCL leader Imran Chowdhury Akash.

The six absconding police officers charged are former Rangpur Metropolitan Police commissioner Md Moniruzzaman Beltu, former deputy police commissioner Md Abu Maruf Hossain Titu, former additional deputy police commissioner Md Shah Noor Alam Patwari Suman, former assistant police commissioner Md Arifuzzaman Jibon, Tajhat police former officer-in-charge Rabiul Islam Nayan, and the university police camp-in-charge sub-inspector Bibhuti Bhushan Roy Madhav.

Seven absconding university employees charged include the former vice-chancellor associate professor of mathematics Md Mashiur Rahman, associate professor of public administration Asaduzzaman Mondol Asad, assistant registrar Md Hafizur Rahman Tufan, section officer Md Moniruzzaman Palash, and three MLSS (Member of Lower Subordinate Staff) Mohammad Nurunnabi Mandal, Mahabubar Rahman Babu and AKM Amir Hossain Amu.
