
A worker was killed in a landslide at a stone quarry at Companiganj upazila in Sylhet Saturday night.
The deceased Habibur Rahman, 35, is son of Asad Miah of Ahmadabad Kalibari village in Bholaganj area at the upazila, police said.
Locals said that three miners were extracting underground stones from a quarry in Bholaganj ropeway area, a restricted area, Saturday night illegally digging a deep hole.
A huge chunk of earth fell on the workers at about 8:30pm, leaving Habibur buried under the earth though the other two managed to come out of the hole, they said.
Heard screaming of the victim’s co-workers, neighbours came forward and recovered Habibur’s body at about 10:30pm, the locals said.
Later in the night, relatives of the victim took the body to his home.
Companiganj police station officer-in-charge Uzayer Al Mahmud Adnan confirmed the death of Habibur to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
He said that the victim’s body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital Sunday noon for a post-mortem examination after recovering it from his home.
‘Efforts to arrest the people who employed the workers to extract underground stones amid such a risky situation are under way,’ the police officer said in the afternoon.
