The 49th anniversary of the execution of Colonel Abu Taher Bir Uttam will be observed today.

The commander of Sector 11 in the liberation war, Abu Taher, was hanged in the Dhaka Central Jail on July 21, 1976 after a military trial inside the jail.


Taher was the founding vice-president of the Jatiya Samajtanrik Dal, which was founded in 1972.

The Bangladesh Jasod claimed that the then military government of Ziaur Rahman killed Taher, the architect of the people-soldier upsurge of November 7, 1975, after a farcical trial.

Different factions of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal have chalked out different programmes to mark the day.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod听 held a discussion on Sunday at Colonel Taher auditorium at its central office where the party vice-president, Shafi Uddin Mollah, chaired.

Jasod central leaders Shawkat Raihan, Saifuzzaman Badsha, Mohammad Mohsin,

Sariful Kabir Shapon, among others, addressed the meeting to mark the day.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD will hold a discussion at the party鈥檚 central office in the capital鈥檚 Gulistan area at 4:00pm.

Bangladesh Jasod will hold a rally in front of the National Press Club at 4:00pm to mark the day.

Leaders and activists of the party factions, their associate bodies and Taher Sangsad will also place wreaths at the grave of Taher in Netrakona in the morning.
