
The second shift of radiotherapy service for cancer patients using latest technological treatment methods was launched at the department of clinical oncology of Bangladesh Medical University in Dhaka on Sunday.
BMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam inaugurated the service, said a press release.
The second shift will run from 2:30pm to 6:00pm. Radiotherapy service is being provided to 40 to 45 patients in the first shift from 8:00am to 2:30pm.
Currently, with the launch of the second shift, it will be possible to provide world-class radiotherapy service to 25 more patients every day. Accordingly, it will be possible to provide radiotherapy to 600 to 700 more patients than before every month.
The Department of Clinical Oncology informed that this department has a well-trained radiation oncology team consisting of world-class radiation oncologists, medical physicists and medical technologists, who will provide radiotherapy services to cancer patients.
Shahinul Alam said that the introduction of the second shift of radiotherapy medical services in the clinical oncology department was an example for other departments of this university to follow.
The BMU VC also emphasised on conducting regular tumour boards at the initiative of the clinical oncology department and shed light on this issue in detail.
Pro-VC for administration Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad mentioned that the introduction of the second shift of radiotherapy medical services was a major achievement of BMU.
Pro-VC for research and development Professor Dr Mujibur Rahman Hawlader said, ‘The administration of BMU is dedicated and committed to providing more services to the people, especially to the patients. The launch of the second shift of radiotherapy treatment services is also a successful implementation of that effort.’
Treasurer Professor Dr Nahrin Akhtar said that cancer patients had to wait for days, months after months to receive radiotherapy services, now that situation will improve to some extent. ‘This is a major achievement of the university.’
Chairman of the department of clinical oncology, Professor Dr Md Syed Akram Hossain said that the department is being reorganised through the proper use of limited resources.
