Theatre troupe Prachyanat on Saturday staged the second show of their new theatre production titled Byatikram Ebang Niyam at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

The play, directed by Azad Abul Kalam, is an adaptation by Shahidul Mamun of Bertolt Brecht’s ‘The Exception and the Rule’.

Byatikram Ebang Niyam is a story that subtly identifies the discriminatory justice system in a class-divided society. It is a story of a wealthy merchant who must cross a desert to close a business deal. He starts his journey with a guide and a porter. But on the journey, steeped with dangers, a deep feeling of insecurity overtakes him, making him suspect his companions.

At one point he fires his guide and then shoot dead his porter who actually brought him water amid the scorching desert. Led by his suspicion, the merchant thought he was about to attack him.

But the merchant eventually was acquitted in court that was convinced by the defendant’s logic that he killed him in a self-defence attempt, showing the discriminatory side of the justice system favouring the rich.

Sakhawat Hosain Rizvi, Shatabdi Wadud, Diana Meriline Chowdhury, Adrija Amin, Shraban Shamim and Fuad Bin Idris, among others, performed different characters of the play.

Stage design and light are by Md Saiful Islam has designed the stage, while Neel Kamrul composed the music of the production with costume by Bilkis Jahan Jaba choreography by Santa Shahrin.

The play premiered on Friday at the Experimental Theatre Hall of academy, where the ‘Remembering Monsoon Revolution’ programme organised with the support from the cultural affairs ministry.
