
The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh has taken steps to increase higher education and joint research opportunities for Bangladeshi students in Malaysian universities.
The initiative was taken at a meeting on international cooperation and networking between Bangladesh and Malaysian universities at the UGC in Dhaka on Thursday, said a press release.
UGC Chairman Professor SMA Faiz was present as chief guest while Malaysian high commissioner to Bangladesh Mohammad Suhada Osman, UGC members Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Professor Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Professor Md Saidur Rahman and Professor Masuma Habib were present as special guests at the event.
The event discussed scholarship opportunities, teacher-student exchange, joint masters, PhD and postgraduate programmes, cooperation in biotechnology and health sciences research, increasing industry-academia linkages, exchange of languages and cultures, invitation of joint research applications, organising policy dialogue on good governance in higher education and strengthening climate resilience between Bangladesh and Malaysian universities.
UGC chairman said that Malaysia had many world-class universities. ‘They are providing the same quality of education as universities in the western world. They have the capacity in higher education and research.’
It is important to solve other existing problems, including credit transfer and visa complications so that more students can get the opportunity to pursue higher education in both countries, he added.
Highlighting the experience of his recent educational visit to Malaysia, Professor Faiz said that universities in Bangladesh and Malaysia were gradually improving and providing world-class education.
Suhada Osman said, ‘There are many opportunities for universities in Bangladesh and Malaysia to work together. Malaysia is providing quality higher education at an affordable price. The country has 5 universities ranked among the top 100 universities in the world rankings.’
Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology vice-chancellor Professor Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, Noakhali University of Science and Technology pro-VC Professor Mohammad Rezwanul Haque, and UGC secretary Md Fakhrul Islam, among others, attended the event.
