
Politicians, academics,and professionals on Saturday at a seminar in Dhaka called on the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus to hold the next general elections as early as possible for a democratic transition of the country.
The Bangladesh Jasod organised the seminar at the National Press Club titled 鈥榰nfulfilled national aspirations and the July uprising, which was chaired by its president Sharif Nurul Ambia.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that the main aspiration behind the July uprising was the restoration of democratic rule in the country, establishing the democratic rights of the people.
Without holding the next general elections in a free, fair, and credible manner as early as possible, democratic transition of the country cannot be possible, Amir Khasru said.
Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that the people of the country were still in doubt as to when the interim government would give the next general elections.
Standing committee member of the Bangladesh Jasod Mustuq Husain read out the theme paper in the seminar where he said that the people were waiting for the democratic transition of the country.
Journalist Abu Sayeed Khan called on the left-leaning political parties to unite to wage movements so that the interim government was compelled to give the election.
Rashtra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum聽 demanded that in the next general elections people should be allowed to elect a constituent assembly.
Gana Forum presidium member Subrata Chowdhury said that the interim government had failed to ensure safety and security of the people and also failed to stop the mob culture.
Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince said that without holding the next general elections as early as possible the country could not be free from present political crisis.
