The second round of negotiations over tariff issues between Bangladesh and the United States began for the second day on Thursday in the US capital Washington.

Commerce adviser Sk Bashir Uddin was leading the Bangladesh side with the negotiations with the United States Trade Representative, the agency responsible for promoting US foreign trade policies.

The meeting started at 9:00am (Washington time), according to a message received in Dhaka.

The second round of the negotiations between the two nations began on Wednesday, one day after the 35 per cent tariff on Bangladeshi export goods was announced by president Donald Trump in a letter to chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Dhaka has been arguing for lowering the tariff rate against the US demand for eliminating the trade deficit tilted towards Bangladesh.

The first day of the second round of talks on Wednesday was very comprehensive, touching upon almost all the key aspects of the trade relationships between the two nations, according a release issued by the chief adviser鈥檚 press wing early Thursday.

National security adviser Khalilur Rahman, the chief adviser鈥檚 special assistant on ICT and telecommunications, Faiz Ahmed Tayeb, joined the talks virtually from Dhaka.

The talks are scheduled also for today.
