A discussion on renowned Bangladeshi poet, essayist and fiction writer Mozid Mahmud’s debut novel titled Memorial Club will be held at Book Bar, 57 Duxton Road in Singapore on July 12.

Open to the public and free of charge, the event will feature readings and discussions in both English and Bangla, with participation from poet AK Zilani and scholar Nur Amali Ibrahim.

Memorial Club, originally written in Bangla and translated into English by the writer himself, is an introspective and unflinching portrait of modern life in Dhaka.

It follows Hasan, a disillusioned journalist caught between personal dissatisfaction and professional discontent. A moment of recklessness sends his life into turmoil, prompting deeper questions of desire, alienation and justice.

Mozid Mahmud told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that this novel is not only about one man’s crisis, it is about the deeper wounds and contradictions in our social fabric. ‘I’m honoured to bring it to readers in Singapore.’

He also said that he would be delighted to showcase Bangladeshi literature to an international audience.

There will be a dinner in honour of the author at Cappadocia the night before the event.

Later on July 13, the author will be meeting with other writers in Singapore in a lunch hosted by noted Singaporean writer, editor and playwright Ng Yi-Sheng.

Mozid Mahmud is an influential literary voice in Bangladesh, best known for his poetry collection, Mahfuzamangal, and the biographical fiction, Tumi Shunite Cheyo Na.

His work has earned him the Rabindra-Nazrul Literary Prize and the Bangladesh Writers Club Prize.

Memorial Club was recently published by Gaudy Boy, an imprint dedicated to Asian voices.

The book launch will begin with opening remarks by Jee Leong Koh, publisher of Gaudy Boy LLC, who will introduce the author and the book.

Also speaking at the event is Nur Amali Ibrahim, an anthropologist at the National University of Singapore.
