Intermittent rains since Friday have dumped massive amount of water along the coast, submerging scores of villages and markets, including in Cox鈥檚 Bazar, regarded the country鈥檚 tourist capital.

The forecast by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department that the wet spell would peak over the next two days gave rise to the fear of a wider disaster hitting the coast.


Though continued since Friday, the rain spell intensified over the last two days, with Teknaf recording 244mm of rainfall in the 24 hours until 9:00am on Monday, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.

Run-off from hills continued to gush towards neighborhoods in Cox鈥檚 Bazar, prompting the authorities to issue warning asking locals to move away from areas vulnerable to hill slides and flash flooding.

Ashraf Ullah, a resident of Chakmarkul Rohingya camp, said that houses lay inundated, leaving its residents no place to cook or sleep.

Hnila union Parishad chairman Mohammad Ali confirmed stranding of 300 families in East Rongikhali.

Whykong UP chairman Noor Ahmed Anwari said that many low-lying areas were under water and announcements were going on asking people to move to safer places.

Over a hundred families got stranded in Sabrang union while Shah Porir Dwip鈥檚, Majher Para, Hajir Para and Dakshin Para lay flooded.

Public representatives and residents called for long-term solutions, including canal restoration, drainage development and raising the level of educational and public infrastructure to tackle such flooding in future.

Besides strong monsoon, a low pressure, formed over the land in West Bengal state of India, is feeding the overall system bringing rain to Bangladesh.

Rivers in the Padma, Barhmaputra, Meghna and Hill basins are likely to rapidly swell because of continued heavy rain, warned the FFWC.

Except Rajshahi and Rangpur, the BMD predicted light to moderate rainfall in most places in the six other divisions in Bangladesh.

In the 24 hours until 6:00pm on Monday, the BMD said that Bangladesh鈥檚 highest maximum rainfall of 169mm was recorded in Cox鈥檚 Bazar.

Bangladesh鈥檚 highest maximum temperature of 35.2C was recorded in Dimla in Nilphamari, the BMD said.
