Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman said in Feni on Saturday that the party would not allow any elections like those held during the previous fascist regime.
‘We will not allow any more elections to be held in this country like in the fascist era,’ said Shafiqur while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting with the party’s well-wishers, held at a community centre in the city.
He also stated that the party did not want to see any more election engineering as happened in the past.
Referring to the July uprising, he asked why so many people sacrificed their lives should election engineering continue like by the fascist regime.
Shafiqur stated that no more fascists would be allowed to be created in the country and the reform commissions must be fully cooperated.
Elections without reforms would be considered committing genocide with the elections, he further said.
‘We will not betray the blood of our children and no one will be allowed to betray the blood. … Our fight will continue until the last trace of fascism is wiped out from Bangladesh,’ said Shafiqur.
Chaired by the party’s Feni district amir Abdul Hannan, central party leaders, including Syed Abdullah Md Taher, Liaquat Ali Bhuiyan, Fakhruddin Manik, and SM Kamal Uddin, spoke at the event.
Earlier in the day, Shafiqur, in a meeting with the party leaders at the same venue, said that the proportional representation system election was a path to end fascism and muscle power.
Hinting at the Bangladesh Nationalist Party without naming it, Shafiqur said that a party was spreading the narrative that the Awami League would be rehabilitated if the PR system was followed.
The Awami League regime, ousted on August 5, 2024 in the July uprising, will not be allowed to hold elections on the blood of the uprising martyrs, said Shafiqur.
