All secondary-level government and non-movement educational institutions across the country have been instructed to observe August 5 as July Mass Uprising Day and July 16 as July Martyr Day.
An office order, issued by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education on Thursday, also said that August 8 would not be observed as ‘New Bangladesh Day’.
In these regards, the directorate under the education ministry sent letters to the heads of the educational institutions concerned and others.
The order was signed by the directorate’s assistant director (general administration), Md Khalid Hossain.
August 5 has been declared July Mass Uprising Day to mark the ouster of the authoritarian Awami League regime in a student-led mass uprising.
The Sheikh Hasina-led regime was overthrown on August 5, 2024.
July 16 has been declared July Martyr Day in honour of Abu Sayeed who was killed in police firing on July 16, 2024, in Rangpur during the July uprising.
The interim government, which assumed office on August 8, 2024, had initially decided to observe August 8 as ‘New Bangladesh Day’, but it later dropped the plan.
