Students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology on Thursday staged demonstrations, demanding an end to the alleged discrimination against bachelor of science in engineering graduates in government job recruitment and promotions.

Several hundred students brought out a protest procession in front of the university central library and held a rally at Talaimari intersection on the Dhaka–Rajshahi Highway, partially disrupting traffic.

Addressing the rally, the students alleged that the July mass uprising was against all kinds of discriminatory quota systems.

‘But, we still see the quota systems in technical recruitment, which is against the spirit of the uprising,’ said RUET student welfare director Professor Md Rabiul Islam Sarkar, who joined the rally expressing solidarity with the students.

The students later placed their three-point demand —mandatory competitive examinations for entry-level engineering posts (Grade 9, assistant engineer or equivalent) for all candidates, with BSc in engineering as a required qualification, allowing both diploma and BSc graduates to participate in the recruitment examinations for Grade 10 (sub-assistant engineer or equivalent) posts, and enacting a law to preserve the ‘engineer’ title only for those with a BSc in engineering degree.

Later, the students postponed their demonstration and left the highway, threatening that they would go for a tougher movement if their demands were not met soon.
