The Indian Border Security Force pushed 76 more people into Bangladesh through three border points under Borolekha, Shrimangal and Kulaura upazilas in Moulvibazar Thursday morning.

With the latest push-ins, the number of people, including Rohingyas and Indian nationals, pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF since May 7 has increased to 1,798.

Border Guard Bangladesh 52 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Haque Chowdhury said that 76 people, who were pushed into Bangladesh territory, included women and children.

He said that the BSF pushed 48 people through Pallathal Punji, a hilly area under the jurisdiction of BGB’s Pallathal border outpost under Borolekha upazila, 23 people through the Sindurkhan border point under Shrimangal upazila and five people through the Muraichhara border point under Kulaura upazila.

‘The BGB personnel detained them from the areas at about 6:00am, immediately after they were pushed into Bangladesh,’ the BGB official said.

Ariful said that the detainees admitted in the primary interrogation that they were from Jessore, Bagerhat, Chapainawabganj, Barguna, Barisal and Kurigram districts.

‘They went to India at different times to search for jobs and had been working there for between 6 months to 17 years,’ Lieutenant Colonel Arif said, quoting the detainees.

He said that the BSF picked them up recently from different parts of India and then pushed them into Bangladesh on early Thursday.

The BGB officer added that the detainees were handed over to the respective police stations in the morning for taking the required steps.

Officers-in-charge of the Borolekha, Shrimangal and Kularura police stations said that they contacted the relatives of the detainees.

‘The detainees would be handed over to their relatives,’ he said.

The BSF has so far pushed at least 173 Rohingyas, including 50 registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in India, into Bangladesh.
