
Women leaders at a protest rally in Dhaka on Wednesday called on the interim government to take immediate steps to arrest the rapist responsible for the rape of the woman at Muradnagar in Cumilla.
Bangladesh Nari Mancha organised the rally in front of the National Press Club, which was chaired by Jobaida Parveen.
Jobaida Parveen urged the government to take necessary steps to ensure exemplary punishment for those involved in the rape of the woman.
Central leaders of Bangladesh Nari Mancha Murshida Akhter Nahar, Shiuli Sikder, Sahana Ferdausy Luky, Ishrat Jahan and Mamataj Begum, among others, spoke at the rally.
The rally was followed by a protest procession that ended at Purana Paltan crossing.
The woman, 27, belonging to Hindu community and mother of two children, was raped at her parent鈥檚 home at a village under Muradnagar at the night following June 26. The woman was later tortured and a video of the torture went viral on social media on June 28.
Protests erupted at places of the country after the video went viral on social media while many organisations condemned the incident, demanding justice for the victim.
The police arrested the main accused Fazar Ali for raping the woman and four others for circulation of the video of the crime.
