An 18-year old student who was stabbed by muggers on Monday night died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Wednesday.

The boy, Morshed Alam Tanim, appeared in this year’s Secondary School Certificate exams from Ahmed Bawany Academy School and College in Bangshal in Dhaka city.

Victim’s maternal uncle Tareq Hossain said that muggers waylaid Tanim near Maku Shah Mazar on Nazim Uddin Road in Old Dhaka when he was returning home at about 11:30pm on Monday.

‘The muggers tried to snatch Tanim’s mobile phone. When he resisted, they stabbed him before fleeing,’ Tareq added.

Tanim breathed his last at about 5:30am Wednesday, more than 30 hours after he had been stabbed, said his uncle.

Local people rushed him to a nearby hospital from where his family moved him to DMCH for better treatment.

‘He was later taken home after primary treatment but fell seriously ill again on Tuesday afternoon and was readmitted to DMCH, where he died this morning,’ his uncle said.

Chawkbazar police officer-in-charge Ashrafuzzaman said that the body was handed over to the family.

‘No case was filed yet. An investigation is underway,’ added the police official.
