Police have detained six people over their alleged involvement in looting of 5,00,000 Saudi riyals of a money exchange company in the capital’s Tejgaon on Tuesday.
Tuhin, an employee of the foreign currency trading company, along with his accomplices, staged the mugging incident, said police.
Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for Tejgaon division Ibne Mizan said that the incident occurred on Tuesday evening on the road opposite to Polytechnic Institute at Tejgaon.
‘We, along with a Detective Branch team, conducted raids at different places in Dhaka and took six people, including Tuhin, into custody. We recovered 2,69,000 riyals from them,’ he said.
Tuhin claimed that he was on his way to Uttara from Paltan, carrying 5,00,000 riyals when criminals riding three motorcycles blocked the way of his car, deputy commissioner Mizan said.
‘Tuhin also claimed that criminals later snatched the bag with riyals after threatening to harm him,’ he said.
‘Later, police reached the spot and found Tuhin there and took him into custody,’ said Mizan, adding that Tuhin confessed that he staged the incident with his accomplices to loot the money.
On information given by Tuhin, police later raided different places in the city and detained other five suspects, Mizan said.
He said that initial investigation found that Tuhin owed money to some people in his hometown Brahmanbaria and planned the looting to pay off the debt.
‘An investigation is ongoing to determine if there are more people involved in the incident. Police are preparing to file a case over the incident and the six will be shown arrested in the case once it is filed,’ added the police official.
