A Dhaka court has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to investigate an extortion case filed against suspended Kalabagan police station officer-in-charge Moktaruzzaman, suspended sub-inspector Md Belal Uddin and their alleged associate Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan.
Metropolitan magistrate Sifat Ullah issued the order in writing on Wednesday after hearing the complaint petition on June 30.
The case was filed by educationist and columnist Abdul Wadud with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on June 23.
In his complaint, Wadud alleged that on the night of April 29, the three accused, along with a group of armed men, forcibly entered his residence in Hatirpool, Dhaka.
They allegedly demanded Tk 1 crore in extortion, took Tk 2 lakh on the spot and threatened to implicate him in at least 10 false cases if the rest was not paid.
Wadud further claimed that they ransacked his house, looted his licensed mini-zoo—Phycamolli Centre—and stole 20 pairs of rare exotic birds.
After recording the complaint, the court assigned the CID to probe the allegations and submit a report.
Earlier, OC Moktaruzzaman and SI Belal were suspended on administrative grounds after Wadud lodged a complaint with the Dhaka Metropolitan police commissioner.
Supreme Court lawyer Sarwar Hossain, along with lawyers Syed Ahmed Gazi, Aminul Islam Mollick, Omar Faruk, and Sohel Ahmed, represented Wadud in court.
