National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Tuesday said that any delay or evasion concerning the July Declaration and the July Charter would lead the students and people to take to the streets once again.
‘We want to issue a clear warning in this regard,’ said Nahid, stating, ‘If the government, or anyone else believes that those who launched the movement in the streets have quietly went back home, you would make a grave mistake.’
‘We, the people of Bangladesh, will mobilise in every street and corner of the country. We will again organise students, citizens, youth, and workers to start the movement,’ said Nahid, also a former central leader of Students Against Discrimination, which spearheaded the July uprising to the oust the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
‘We are going to enter the capital Dhaka with the collective force of the nation — students, workers, and people on August 3,’ he announced.
‘We will claim and secure both the July Declaration and the July Charter,’ he affirmed.
Nahid made these remarks at Pirganj Babonpur Jaforpara village while visiting the grave of Abu Sayeed who was killed in police firing during the student-led mass uprising in Rangpur on July 16, 2024.
Addressing the inauguration of the NCP’s country-wide programme, from July 1 to August 5 marking the first anniversary of the uprising, Nahid said that the martyrs like Abu Sayeed would continue to inspire the mass people to oust any fascist regime.
‘We term the July uprising as a beginning for national reconstruction,’ he added.
‘We reaffirm today our three core demands — justice, reform, and a new constitution — from the grave of Abu Sayed. We must pursue justice and instituteional reform, and push for a new constitution through an elected parliament to build a new Bangladesh,’ he said.
He expressed disappointment as the trial of the ousted Awami League for its involvement in mass killings during the uprising and reforms in various sectors to build a discrimination-free Bangladesh were not completed yet.
Central NCP leaders, including its member secretary Akhter Hossain, chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary and senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara, among others, also took part during the visit.
Besides, the party leaders held marches and rallies at different places of Rangpur and Gaibandha, including Rangpur town hall, Lalbagh, Shapla, Jahaj Company Intersection in Rangpur city and Gaibandha Shaheed Minar.
A group of student and youth leaders, who led the uprising that ousted the authoritarian Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5, 2024, formed the National Citizen Party on February 28.
