Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on Tuesday lit candles and performed the national anthem at the Central Shaheed Minar marking the anniversary of July mass uprising and in remembrance of its martyrs.

The programme titled Aloy Aloy Smriti Samujjwal began in the early hour of Tuesday, July 1, with participation of thousands of leaders and activists of the central committee, Dhaka University unit committee, Jagannath University unit committee, and four metropolitan units committees of Dhaka.

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi attended the event as the chief guest. Among others, BNP chairperson’s political adviser Amanullah Aman, and former Chhatra Dal president Asifuzzaman Ripon were also present at the programme.

The programme was led by Chhatra Dal central president Rakibul Islam and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.

While addressing the event, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, ‘This is not just a candlelight vigil. Today’s candlelight symbolises a step toward the march for democracy.’

‘Sheikh Hasina said that everything would be shut down if resisted. Yet, despite all obstacles, she failed to stop the students’ movement for democracy,’ he stated.

Chhatra Dal president Rakibul Islam Rakib said that over a hundred leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal were martyred in the July mass uprising.

‘We will never forget their sacrifices,’ he said.

The organisation also announced to hold month-long programmes featuring discussions, human chains, exhibitions, blood donation programmes and cultural events in memory of the martyrs.
