
Politicians, academics and professionals on Monday called on the interim government to take immediate steps to recover the huge amount of money siphoned off abroad during 15 years of the authoritarian Awami League regime which was ousted in a mass uprising on August 5, 2024.
They made the call at a human chain organised by the Ohingsho Ganaobhuthan Bangladesh, a socio-political platform, in front of the National Press Club in the capital Dhaka. The event was chaired by the organisation鈥檚 senior joint member secretary, Ziaur Rahman.
The country lost $16 billion annually on average between 2009 and 2023 because of the illicit fund flow under the AL regime, according to the report submitted in December 2024 by a committee on the White Paper on the State of Bangladesh Economy.
Ganosamhati Andolan central leader Bachchu Bhuiyan called on the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus to take immediate steps to recover the huge amount of money laundered abroad during the fascist rule of Awami League government.
Lawyer and central leader of Jatiyatabadi Democratic Movement Shahidul Azam said that the interim government could use the recovered money for the welfare of the common people of Bangladesh.
Ziaur said that their organisation would continue its movements in demand of the recovery of the laundered money.
Gono Odhikar Party chairman Mohammad Abdus Satter, Rastra Sanskar Andolan central leader Didarul Bhuiyan, and human rights activists Rezaul Karim Riaz, Mohammad Shamsuddin and Hanif Bangladeshi, among others, spoke at the human chain programme.
