The serene watercolours in display at the ‘Rhid Kabbye Prakriti’ exhibition are a serenade by Md Raqibul Hassan, paying tribute to Bengal’s age-old rural setting, people’s life woven in the nature.

The 25 watercolours along with two acrylic ones bear the thumbprint of an impressionist, seeking to portray people in their daily life—women carrying water in pitcher, goatherd feeding goats on riverbank, birds chirping on the tree branch.

Raqib, however, seeks to turn his eyes away for once towards the tumults of wars and destruction in his ‘Khomotar Lorai’ (fight for power), a poignant depiction of life devastated by war.

‘These artworks reflect my philosophy that if we want to live a pure life we must preserve our nature,’ Md Raqibul Hassan puts, musing that his paintings are an outcome of dialogue with the nature.

Curated by Sheikh Monir Uddin Jewel, the five-day exhibition held at the Zainul Gallery of Dhaka University was inaugurated on June 27 and concludes today.
