Eight people were arrested on early Sunday morning in a case filed in the incident of snatching an accused after attacking the police at Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj.

The snatching incident occurred after the police on early Saturday morning arrested Nazir Uddin, 40, after conducting a raid on Dakshin Gajnaipur village in Nabiganj.

Nazir is an accused in a case filed for assaulting an executive magistrate on May 31 when the upazila administration was conducting a drive to evict an illegal cattle market set up at Janatar Bazar in the area.

Immediately after the news of the arrest went round, the villagers announced from the local mosque’s loudspeakers that robbers were attacking the village, calling on all to resist them, according to the police.

The villagers then gathered and swooped on the police and snatched Nazir from them, injuring several policemen and vandalising three vehicles, including a police van and two CNG-run auto-rickshaws rented by the police, Nabiganj police officer-in-charge Sheikh Kamruzzaman said.

He said that constables Shah Imran, 27, Mozammed Haque, 25, and Paltan Chandra Das, 25, were injured in the attack.

‘Sub-inspector Shawkat Ali filed a case in this regard against some 200 attackers, including 34 named people, on Saturday afternoon,’ the police officer said.

He said that they also arrested eight people early Sunday morning from different locations of Nabiganj in this regard.

‘In the afternoon the arrested were produced before the district judicial magistrate court that ordered to send them to jail,’ OC Kamruzzaman said.
