A man was detained on Saturday night on allegations of beating his wife to death the same night over a dowry dispute in the old Launchghat area of Dattapara in Narsingdi town.

The victim, Smriti Rani Das, 45, daughter of Jantu Chandra Das of Ghoradia-Sangita area of ​​the city, was married to Shankar Chandra Das, son of Yogesh Chandra Das of Dattapara area of ​​the town.


According to the victim’s family, despite giving Tk 3,50,000 in cash, along with gold jewellery and other items as dowries, Shankar used to torture Smriti for more money.

Recently, Shankar demanded Tk 2,00,000, but Smriti refused to bring the money from her father’s house, they said.

On Saturday night, Shankar severely beat his wife, and when she lost consciousness, he took her to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and informed his mother-in-law about the matter at around 10:00pm, they added.

Later, Smriti’s family went to the hospital and found her already dead.

At that time, when Shankar tried to flee the hospital, Smriti’s family caught him and handed him over to the police.

Narsingdi model police station sub-inspector Roman Sadekin said that Shankar was detained for questioning.

Legal action would be taken after a case was filed with the police station, the SI added.

Smriti’s body was handed over to her family after an autopsy on Sunday.
