A youth was beaten to death at Palupara under Gobindaganj in Gaibandha allegedly for raping a six-year-old child.
The deceased, Habil Mia, was a resident of Palupara village.
People of the area alleged that Habil Mia raped a child of a neighbouring house on Friday evening and then fled.
On Saturday night, when the people spotted the alleged rapist roaming around the area, they became enraged, detained him and severely beat him.
He was taken to the upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.
Gobindaganj police station officer-in-charge Bulbul Islam said that after receiving the information, they rescued Habil from the scene in critical condition and admitted to the upazila health complex.
Habil鈥檚 body will be sent to morgue for autopsy, he said.
