The protesting tax officials of Bangladesh's National Board of Revenue have withdrawn their complete shutdown programme of the NBR on Sunday evening, following negotiations between business leaders and the interim government.
The NBR Reforms Unity Council president Hasan Mohammad Tarek Rikabder made the announcement at a press conference held at the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries office in Tejgaon, Dhaka on the day.
He said that responding to requests from top business leaders and considering the need to maintain a smooth supply chain for exports and imports in the interest of the economy and the public, the tax officials decided to withdraw the complete shutdown programme.
They also welcomed the government-formed five-member committee.
However, he added that the platform would continue its activities in pursuit of a sustainable and transparent revenue system.
The NBR officials have been staging protests since April 29 under the banner of the NBR Reforms Unity Council.
The interim government on May 12 promulgated the Revenue Policy and Revenue Management Ordinance 2025 by dissolving the revenue board and splitting it into two divisions under the finance ministry to modernise the tax administration and boost revenue collection.
Since the issuance of the ordinance, the NBR officials staged a series of protests comprising sit-ins, pen-down strikes, non-cooperation with the NBR chairman, complete shutdown and march to NBR programme in May and June.
