
Police arrested the prime accused in the rape case involving an expatriate’s wife in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla, in Dhaka’s Sutrapur area on early Sunday.
The arrested is Fazar Ali Fazar, 36, son of Shahid Mia of village Bahechar (Purbo Para) in Muradnagar.
Jahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar Police Station, said tipped off, a special team conducted a drive in Dhaka’s Sutrapur area and arrested Fazar Ali.
The woman was raped at village Ramchandrapur Panchkitta of Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla on Thursday night.
According to police and local people, after the incident Fazar Ali was caught and beaten by local people but he managed to flee.
Shortly after the incident, some people who were present at the scene filmed the victim and circulated the video on social media platforms, prompting outrage and concern over the violation of decency and privacy.
Upon receiving the news, a team from Muradnagar Police Station rushed to the spot.
Based on a written complaint filed by the victim, a case was lodged under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Replying to a query, OC Jahidur said that five people had so far been arrested in connection with the incident, including four for spreading the video on social media.
‘Further investigation is underway,’ the OC said.
