Left leaders on Friday urged the interim government to refrain from leasing out the Chitagong port to any foreign company and giving corridor to Myanmar’s Rakhine state in the name of humanitarian channel.

They made the call at different roadside rallies on the first day of their two-day Dhaka-Chattogram road march form in front of the National Press Club in the capital.


The left political parties are holding the road march under the banner of Anti-imperialism Patriotic People. Leaders of more than 50 left political parties and socio-cultural organisations are attending the road march.

At the inaugural rally in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, Left Democratic Alliance coordinator and Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince warned the government of facing tougher movement if the government tried to implement the plan to lease out the Chattogram port to any foreign company and provide humanitarian passage to Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

Anti-Fascism Left Alliance coordinator Nasir Uddin Nasu also spoke there.

CPB president Mohammad Shah Alam, former CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim, Socialist Party of Bangladesh adviser Khalequzzaman, Revolutionary Communist League general secretary Iqbal Kabir Jahid, Bangladesher Samyabadi Andolan coordinator Subharangshu Chakrabortty, Bangladesh Jasod central leader Mushtuq Hussain, Democratic Revolutionary Party general secretary Mushrefa Mishu, SPB (Marxist) coordinator Masud Rana,  among others, attended the opening rally. 

The left political parties are holding the road march protesting at the interim government’s plan to lease out the management of the New Mooring Container Terminal of Chittagong Port to a foreign company and the reported move to allow a humanitarian passage to civil war-ridden Rakhine state of Myanmar.

The Chattogram-bound march from in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka met in roadside rallies at different points including Chattogram Road, Mugra Para and Jamaldi in Narayanganj, Chandina and Cumilla in Cumilla on the first day.

CPB president Mohammad Shah Alam, general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince, SPB general secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz, joint general secretary Razequzzaman Ratan, and left leader Mushrefa Mishu, among others, spoke at the roadside rallies on the first day.

The marchers reached Feni in the evening and are staying there for the night.

On the second day on Saturday, the marchers will hold roadside rallies in Feni, and Mirersari and Sitakundu in Chattogram.

The marchers will hold the concluding rally in front of the Chittagong  Sea Port, according to a press release.
