Finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed on Thursday said that they had asked the protesting officials and employees of the National Board of Revenue to suspend their programme immediately.
‘I hope that they will keep the request,’ said the finance adviser after reviewing the overall situation in a meeting at his office in the evening.
The meeting was participated by finance secretary Khairuzzaman Mozumder, NBR chairman Abdur Rahman Khan and 167 members of the NBR.
The NBR chairman told reporters that the meeting had identified misunderstandings between the government and the taxmen.
Without elaborating on the misunderstandings, the NBR chairman expected that a solution would be found soon.
He said that the government was discussing with the protesting NBR officials and employees. Â
The NBR chairman, however, did not make any comment regarding his resignation demanded by the NBR Reform Unity Council.
At a press conference in the afternoon, the council sought the intervention of the chief adviser to resolve the ongoing complexity.
The council threatened that if their demands would not be met by June 27, they would enforce a complete shutdown at the customs, tax and VAT offices across the country from June 28.
However, the international passenger services would be out of the purview of the shutdown.
The council also said that they would observe a ‘long march to NBR’ on June 28.
A large number of the members of law enforcement agencies, including the members of the army, the police, the Rapid Action Battalion, and the Border Guard Bangladesh, were deployed at the NBR.
The members of the law enforcement agencies closed all gates of the NBR in the capital’s Agargaon area and didn’t allow to enter anyone to the NBR office.
The NBR officials formed the platform after the interim government on May 12 promulgated the ‘Revenue Policy and Revenue Management Ordinance’ by dissolving the revenue board and splitting it into two divisions under the finance ministry to modernise the tax administration and boost revenue collection.
