Home affairs adviser retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday said that heads of all forces had assured to maintain law and order during the forthcoming general elections, likely to be held in mid-February next year.
His remarks came in response to a question while he was talking to reporters following the 10th meeting of the committee of the council of advisers on law and order held at the secretariat in Dhaka city.
‘Chiefs of almost all forces were present in today’s law and order meeting. They have assured to maintain law and order during the elections. They remain vigilant in this regard,’ said home adviser.
He said that the government would provide all assistance to the Election Commission to ensure a good election.
Jahangir also said that fair election did not only depend on law enforcement agencies but also depended on the participants.
‘We hope that we will give a fair election with help from all quarters in a coordinated way,’ he added.
Jahangir also regretted the mob attack during the arrest of former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda.
The meeting also discussed the overall law and order situation. Several members of the council of advisers and other officials were present at the time.
