The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday got back its registration with the Election Commission as a political party and its electoral symbol, scale.

The Election Commission Secretariat issued a gazette notification in this connection.

Jamaat, registered as a political party in 2008 under the Representation of the People Order 1972, lost its registration during the Awami League regime.

The High Court, responding to a writ petition, in 2013 deemed the Jamaat鈥檚 charter incompatible with the constitutional principles of secularism and sovereignty, and the EC in 2018 cancelled the party鈥檚 registration through a notification.

Jamaat鈥檚 electoral symbol scale was revoked in 2016 following a Supreme Court directive citing the scale鈥檚 association with the judiciary.

Following the 2013 High Court ruling, the Jamaat filed an appeal which was dismissed before being reinstated in late 2024, after the fall of the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024 amid a mass uprising.

Only four days before the fall, the Awami League regime on August 1, 2024 banned the Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, labelling them terrorist organisations under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

After assuming office on August 8, 2024, the interim government reversed the ban through a gazette notification.

On June 1, the Appellate Division overturned that High Court decision and directed the EC to resolve all pending issues related to the party鈥檚 registration and constitution.

The verdict paved the way for the Jamaat to seek full political reinstatement as a political party.

After the June 1 verdict, the EC held an internal review and decided on June 4 to reinstate Jamaat鈥檚 registration and electoral symbol.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah stated at the time that the commission had reviewed all legal aspects and court directives before reaching the decision, confirming that the party would get back both its registration and electoral symbol.
