
The Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court on Sunday allowed the Anti-Corruption Commission to freeze 29 bank accounts of former Awami League lawmaker for Narayanganj-4 constituency Shamim Osman, his family members and their beneficiaries for their alleged involvement in corruption.
The court also imposed a travel ban on three children of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury over allegations of corruption.
Judge Md Jakir Hossain of the court, responding to a petition submitted by ACC deputy director Rezaul Karim, allowed the ACC to freeze 29 bank accounts of Shamim Osman, his wife Salma Osman, their son Imtinan Osman and daughter Labiba Zoha Angona.
The former lawmaker and others deposited Tk 12.87 crore in these accounts.
The court also allowed the ACC to seize a plot of Shamim Osman in the Purbachal New Town Project and nine kathas of land in the capital鈥檚 Uttara. The market value of the immovable properties is Tk 1,73,60,000.
The ACC in the petition said that they came to know from a credible source that Shamim Osman and others were attempting to transfer the properties elsewhere. So, an order is needed to prevent the transfer.
On February 25, the same court issued a travel ban on Shamim Osman and his family members in connection with graft allegations.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5, 2024, several murder and attempted murder cases were filed against Shamim Osman and his family members with different police stations in Dhaka and Narayanganj.
The same court on Sunday, responding to a petition submitted by the ACC, imposed a travel ban on three children of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury over allegations of graft.
The three children of Saifuzzaman are Tanayem Zaman Chowdhury, Sadakat Zaman Chowdhury and Zeba Zaman Chowdhury.
The ACC in its petition said that a joint taskforce of the ACC, the Criminal Investigation Department and the National Board of Revenue had been formed to probe allegations against Saifuzzaman, individuals and companies related to his interest.
The ACC said that the graft suspects might try to flee the country and a travel ban should be imposed on them for the sake of proper probe.
After the fall of the AL regime on August 5, 2024 amid a student-led mass uprising, the ACC started an inquiry against Saifuzzaman, also a former lawmaker for Chattogream-13 constituency, over the allegations of amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.
