Two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology were arrested on Thursday night allegedly for assaulting sexually a female student and capturing the incident on video.

The arrested are Shanta Adnan and Swagata Das Partha, third-year social science students of the university, police said.


The police said that one of the students was arrested on the campus at around 9:30pm and the other at a student mess in the Surma Residential Area in Sylhet city.

The SUST administration said that the victim filed a written complaint with the university proctor on Thursday noon in this regard.

The victim alleged that the accused had taken her to a student mess in the Surma Residential Area adjacent to the university campus in early May.

They then assaulted her sexually there and recorded the incident on camera.

Confirming the matter, SUST proctor Mokhlasur Rahman said that the university administration took the matter seriously and asked the police to take immediate action in this regard.

‘The victim was also asked to file a case with the Kotwali police in this regard,’ he said.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam said  that the allegations brought against the arrested students were found true in the primary interrogation.

He told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the arrested were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Sylhet in the afternoon and the court ordered to send them to jail.

Protesting at the incident, SUST social science students staged demonstrations on the university campus on Friday afternoon demanding immediate expulsion of the rape suspects from the university and their exemplary punishment.
