The Bangladesh Army on Thursday said that it would take stern actions against mob violence, loss of people’s lives and properties, and activities that would create public suffering in the future.

The colonel staff of the Military Operations Directorate of the Army Headquarters, Colonel Md Shafiqul Islam, made the remarks at a press conference held at the Officers Mess A in the Dhaka cantonment in the afternoon.

‘Army is always committed to ensuring citizens’ security and reducing public suffering,’ said Shafiqul Islam.

He said that they had arrested 996 people, including listed crime suspects, members of teenage gangs and robbers and other crime suspects in the past three weeks, raising the total number of arrestees to 15,262 so far during the interim government’s tenure.

‘Army had returned Tk 35,26,233 to passengers of 1,255 vehicles for charging extra fare during the Eid-ul-Azha journey,’ he added.

He said that the Bangladesh Army had recovered 56 illegal arms and 990 rounds of ammunition in the past three weeks. As a result, the army has recovered 9,667 arms and 2,86,754 rounds of ammunition during the government’s tenure.

Responding to a question about whether the army was informed about the possible general elections in February, Colonel Md Shafiqul Islam said that they did not receive any directions from the government about the election.

‘We are prepared to follow the government directives,’ he added.
