One person was allegedly killed and 20 people, including 11 policemen, were injured as people from two villages clashed over a football match at Belabo upazila in Narsingdi.

The deceased, Saiful Islam, 26, is son of Jibon Mia of Char Belabo village of the upazila.


The clash took place between Char Belabo and Belabo villages under the Belabo upazila in the district on Thursday afternoon.

On information, Belabo police and additional police members of Narsingdi went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Police and local sources said that on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, a football game was arranged between Belabo and Char Belabo villages at the local Hossain Ali College ground on Wednesday afternoon.

During the game, there was an altercation between the two teams.

On the way home after the game, a few youths from Char Belabo and Belabo villages got into an argument over the issue of giving side to a motorcycle and an easy bike.

At one point, the two sides, armed with locally made weapons, locked into a clash that left Saiful dead on the spot, local people said.

On information, the Belabo police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control but failed, the police said.

Later, the police fired tear gas and also fired into the air to bring the situation under control.

At least 20 people, including 11 policemen, were injured in the clash between the two sides.

Later, additional police personnel from Narsingdi reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Mir Mahabubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Belabo police, said that two groups of villagers clashed over a football game and 11 policemen were also injured in the clash.

Later, additional police forces arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control, the OC added.

Manjur Mushfika Ferdous, the doctor on duty at Belabo Upazila Health Complex, said that a person named Saiful Islam was brought to the hospital dead.

Narsingdi additional superintendent of police for crime Sujan Chandra Sarkar said that additional police members were deployed at the scene.

‘The situation is currently calm and we have received reports that several people, including police, were injured in the incident,’ the police official said, adding that one person was killed in the clash.

Legal action is under way in this regard, said Sujan Chandra.
