Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been appointed as the new Bangladesh one-day international captain for the next 12 months, confirmed the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Thursday.Ìý
The 27-year-old all-rounder will replace Najmul Hossain Shanto, who has already stepped down from the T20 captaincy.Ìý
Mehidy's first-ever tenure of full-time captaincy will commence with the forthcoming three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka next month.Ìý
He has previously led the national side in four ODIs along with two Tests, all in Shanto’s absence.
Mehidy, who is currently ranked fourth in ICC ODI all-rounder rankings, has so far played 105 ODIs, where he scored 1,617 runs and took 110 wickets.Ìý
Ìý‘It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the Board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer and I am grateful for the confidence the Board has shown in me,’ Mehidy said following his appointment as the ODI captain.
‘I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country.’Ìý
Chairman of BCB’s Cricket Operations Committee Nazmul Abedeen Fahim said Mehidy was the ideal choice for the role
‘The Board felt that Miraz’s consistent performances with the bat and ball, his ability to fight and inspire the team and his energetic presence on and off the field make him an ideal candidate to lead the ODI side during a transitional time,’ Fahim was quoted as saying in the press release provided by the BCB.
‘We believe he has the temperament and maturity to take Bangladesh forward in this format.’
Fahim also thanked Shanto, who captained Bangladesh in 13 ODIs, ‘for the positivity and character he has demonstrated as captain.’Ìý
Mehidy’s appointment marks the return of different captains in each international format since the Mominul Haque (Test), Tamim Iqbal (ODI), and Mahmudullah (T20I) eras, which ended in 2022.Ìý
