Fishermen in the coastal districts are set to resume fishing in the Bay of Bengal as the government’s 58-day fishing ban will come to an end at midnight on Wednesday.
‘The government imposed 58-day fishing ban in the Bay on April 15 aiming at proper breeding, production, preservation and collection of marine fisheries,’ fisheries department official Biswajit Kumar Dev said.
He said that a total of 65,000 sea-bound fishermen in Bhola refrained from fishing in the sea following the government’s ban.
The government, however, has allocated 78kg of rice against each fisherman in the district under the Vulnerable Group Feeding programme, he said.
Dev said that during the fishing restrictions, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Coast Guard and Department of Fisheries conducted joint operations against fishing of all sorts of fishes in the sea.
