
Dhaka residents continued to leave Dhaka city on Tuesday while very few people were seen returning from outside the capital after celebrating Eid-ul-Azha.
Major highways remained free from traffic congestion as few long-route buses plied on the day.
Bangladesh Railway officials said that many people left the capital on the day with few retuning.
Also in the waterways, few passengers were seen arriving at or leaving the Sadarghat launch terminal in Dhaka on Tuesday. Â
Those involved in the transport sector said that many preferred to leave Dhaka after Eid as the public holiday announced for the occasion is long.
The rush to return to the capital would intensify from Friday, they predicted.Â
On the day, few vehicles and people were seen on the roads in Dhaka city with the major roads looking deserted. Very few shops were seen open on the day.Â
Bangladesh celebrated Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, on June 7 with the public holiday for Eid announced for June 5–14.
On Tuesday morning, many people were seen leaving by trains at Dhaka Railway Station, popularly known as Kamalapur rail station.
Station master Anowar Hossain said that few people returned to the city on the day by trains from the outside districts.
‘The number of people leaving Dhaka was higher than those who returned,’ he said, adding that from Friday the rush of Dhaka-bound people would increase.
Most trains ran on schedule, Anowar added.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Tangail reported that the number of vehicles on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge national highway was few on the day.
No traffic gridlock on the highway was reported throughout the day.
Earlier between June 4 morning and June 6 night, passengers and transport workers suffered on the highway due to continued traffic gridlock.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Gazipur reported that few vehicles and people were seen at Tongi, Bhogra bypass and Chandana crossings on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and Chandra crossing on the Dhaka-Tangail highway on Tuesday.
Bus operators said that all apparel factories in the district would reopen on June 15 and the rush of Gazipur-bound people would intensify from Friday.
Similar scenario was seen on the Dhaka-Mymensingh national highway, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Mymensingh.
Regarding waterways, the pressure of Dhaka-bound passengers on the launches will also increase from Friday, said officials concerned.
Md Mubarak Hossain, joint director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority posted at Sadarghat, said that the rush of passengers from the southern districts would intensify from Friday.
