The police arrested 23 readymade garment workers on Wednesday in a case filed over alleged attacks on the police and vandalising a police vehicle in Gazipur’s Sreepur the previous day.
The clashes took place as the workers staged a protest on Tuesday, demanding justice for the death of Zakir Hossain, 24, a garment worker who reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the roof of a factory’s eight-storey building.
Sreepur police officer-in-charge Muhammad Abdul Barek said that Gazipur Industrial Police sub-inspector of Sreepur zone Sushanta Kumar filed the case against 64 named and 1,500 unidentified individuals over the attack.
‘We arrested 23 individuals in connection with the attack on the police personnel and vandalising a police vehicle. They were already produced before the court today,’ he said on Wednesday.
Gazipur Industrial Police SI Sushanta Kumar said that Zakir Hossain jumped from the roof of Jannat Knitwear Limited on Monday evening and was seriously injured.
Zakir Hossain was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, he said.
Afterwards the workers besieged the factory on Tuesday morning, demanding justice for the deceased worker, said the police officer.
‘At one stage, clashes erupted when the police tried to stop them from vandalising the factory and an armoured vehicle. At least 25 people, including workers and policemen, were injured in the confrontation,’ he added.
Protesting workers claimed that Zakir jumped from the roof after he was denied leave by a senior official who also misbehaved with him.
The workers said that they could not identify the official who misbehaved with Zakir. Â
