
Hindu community people in Dahar Mashihati village of Abhaynagar in Jashore have been suffering from insecurity since a violent attack was carried out on them following the murder of Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal leader Tariqul Islam on May 22.
This was revealed in a statement by a six-member delegation, who visited the spot in Dahar Mashihati village of Abhaynagar in Jashore on Tuesday.
On the night of May 22, Hindu community people, mostly from the Matua community, were attacked and about 20 houses were set ablaze, looted, and vandalised after the Tariqul’s murder, the statement said.
The delegation members who visited the spot included Dhaka University professor Robayet Ferdous, Nagorik Udyog chief executive Zakir Hossain, Nari Oikya Parishad president Supriya Bhattacharya, human rights activist Dipayan Khisa, Bangladesh Chhatra Union former president Deepak Shil and rights activist and executive editor of IPNews Satej Chakma.
Condemning the murder of Tariqul, Robayet Ferdous said that attack on the homes of the poor and innocent ‘Sanatani’ followers was very cruel.
‘We have noticed that innocent people, who were attacked, are suffering from insecurity after the attack,’ Robayet said, adding that they hope that the local administration will restore their confidence by providing them with security and relief.
Tariqul Islam, 43, president of the Nawapara municipality unit of Krishak Dal, farmers’ wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and also a resident of Dhopadi area under the municipality, was allegedly shot and hacked to death at a fish enclosure in Dahar Mashihati village of Sundali union council under Abhaynagar upazila on the evening of May 22, according to media reports.
