Fresh Anonna and the Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Society of Bangladesh jointly hosted a panel discussion to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene.

Organised by the Daily Amader Shomoy, the event took place at a hotel in Dhaka on Saturday, said a press release on Monday.

The seminar, titled Together for a Menstruation-Friendly World, was supported by Meghna Group of Industries brand Fresh Anonna Sanitary Napkin and PAGSB, and aimed to foster open dialogue around menstrual health and break entrenched taboos.

PAGSB president Professor Kohinoor Begum inaugurated the event by highlighting that a large portion of women in the country still lack awareness about menstruation — a topic too often shrouded in shame. ‘Periods are a natural part of life and should never be a source of embarrassment.’

She further stressed that coordinated efforts by doctors, sponsors, the media, educational institutions and social organisations could drive positive change and nurture a more informed, health-conscious generation.

Speaking as a special guest, MGI director Barrister Tasnim Mostafa noted, ‘In a society where men and women share every sphere of life, it is unthinkable that shame still clouds conversations about menstruation.’

It is vital that we break this silence, foster openness, and ensure everyone understands and respects this natural aspect of women’s health, added Tasnim Mostafa.

PAGSB secretary general Professor Gulshan Ara presented a presentation on menstrual health, reiterating that menstruation was a normal physiological process that should be approached with understanding and care. ‘By practicing proper hygiene and having accurate knowledge, we can reduce the risk of infections and lead healthier lives.’

She also explained that the vaginal pH level fluctuates during menstruation, heightening the risk of bacterial infections, and emphasised the crucial role of hygiene in mitigating these risks.

Moderated by Dr Tania Rahman Mitul, the panel discussion was attended by around 50 doctors.

Special guests included MGI senior GM for brand Kazi Md Mohiuddin, Dr Md Shamsul Haque, programme manager, adolescent and school health programme, MNCAH, DGHS; Dr Md Manjur Hossain, programme manager, adolescent and reproductive health, DGFP; Afsana Rahman Leoni, psychologist and executive editor of Daily Amader Shomoy Mainul Alam, online In charge Moin Bokul and head of digital marketing Sarwar Kabir Shakil.
