Fishing in rivers and canals will be banned and tourist entry will also be prohibited in Sundarban for three months from Sunday to boost the breeding of fish and wildlife.
The ban will remain in effect from June 1 to August 31.
The decision was taken by the Sundarban forest department, said forest officials of Sundarban.
Tanvir Hasan Imran, officer at the Sharankhola forest station, said that from May 24, the issuance of entry permits for fishermen, honey collectors, and tourists to visit the forest was suspended.
Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional forest officer of the East Sundarban division in Bagerhat, said that the ban was part of efforts to enhance the reproductive capacity of aquatic and wildlife resources. No one would be allowed to enter Sundarban during that time.
The DFO also mentioned that a proposal was submitted to the ministry to provide food assistance and incentives to fishermen, who depend on the forest for their livelihood. The proposal was then awaiting the ministry’s decision.
Tanzir Hasan, divisional forest officer of the West Sundarban division in Khulna said that during the banned period, the government would provide fish farmers, honey collectors, Mouals and Bawalis.
To promote the breeding of fish, wildlife and free Sundarban from environmental pollution, every year the authorities banned fishing in rivers and canals and tourists’ entry in Sundarban.
