A Dhaka court on Thursday sent a former professor of Jagannath University, Anowara Begum, to jail in a case filed over an attempted murder during an anti-discrimination student protest on July 19.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after the investigation officer in the case and sub-inspector of Sutrapur police, AKM Mahmudul Kabir, produced her before the court with a prayer to send her in jail until the investigation was completed.

Sutrapur police officer-in-charge Md Saiful Islam said that she was arrested on the university campus on Wednesday afternoon.

Former general secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal JnU unit, Sujan Molla, filed the case, he said.

The process of taking legal action is under way, OC Saiful added.

JnU proctor Tazammol Hoque said that they were not informed about her visit to the campus, nor was the university administration was aware of the case.

‘We’ve heard that police arrested her at a place outside the campus,’ he said.

The plaintiff alleged that while serving as a member of the Public Service Commission, professor Anowara discriminated against candidates who were not affiliated with the Awami League.

‘She ensured only pro-AL individuals passed the civil service exams, placing the Bangladesh Chhatra League-backed individuals in key law enforcement positions,’ Sujan claimed.

She financially backed BCL activists to suppress opposition student organisations and during the July protests she funded attacks on anti-discrimination student activists, the case statement read.

Sujan Molla was shot in the eye in front of Star Hotel in the Sutrapur area during the anti-discrimination protest on July 19.
