The five-day fourth Bangladesh Short and Documentary Film Festival began on Tuesday.

The event was organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at its eight divisional headquarters.


The festival was inaugurated by filmmaker Anam Biswas at the national theatre hall of the BSA in the capital Dhaka.

Film producer Md Arifur Rahman and film critic-screenwriter Sadia Khalid Reeti were present at the opening ceremony presided by the BSA acting director general Mohammad Wares Hossain.

On the opening day, seven films were screened at the festival that began at 7:00pm.

The festival will screen 89 films portraying diverse stories and contemporary social issues selected from 300 films submitted by Bangladeshi filmmakers.聽

Out of 89 films, 60 fictional short films and 29 documentaries will be screened at the festival.聽

Filmmaker Shekhar Das, Mehedi Mostafa, Tasmiah Afrin Mou, editor and sound designer Sharmin Doja, film producer Md Arifur Rahman and film critic-screenwriter Sadia Khalid Reeti were the members of the selection committee for the festival.聽

The festival will declare awards in Best Film, Best Director and Special Jury Mention in both categories short-fiction and documentary.

Besides, four special awards namely Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound Design, and Best Production Design will be declared in both categories.

With BSA director general and director of Theatre and Film department, filmmaker Shaheen Dill-Riaz, Ashfaque Nipun, Humaira Bilkis and cinematographer Rashed Zaman are on the jury board to declare the awards.

The festival will also organise a day-long masterclass on Sound and Cinematography conducted by Nahid Masud and Rashed Zaman on May 30.

The festival will end on Saturday with an awards ceremony at the National Theatre Hall of the BSA.聽
