Four men who suffered eye injuries during the July mass uprising attempted suicide on Sunday by ingesting poison at the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Dhaka.

The incident took place at the office of the hospital director Professor Dr. Khair Ahmed Chowdhury on Sunday afternoon.

The victims are believed to have been frustrated over unmet demands.

Professor Khair Ahmed Chowdhury confirmed the incident to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

Witnesses said the four individuals—Shimul, Maruf, Sagar, and Akhtar Hossain—reportedly brought poison with them in their pockets and consumed it during an ongoing meeting in the director’s office.

No details of the four people were found immediately.

They were trying to present their demands during a meeting with the chief executive officer of the July Foundation.

When asked to wait, they became agitated and consumed the poison on the spot.

Professor Chowdhury said, ‘The four, all injured during the July movement and currently under our care, suddenly ingested poison during a meeting in my office. I was shocked by their actions. We were unaware of any such plans.’

He added that the victims were immediately rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and are currently out of danger.

‘We have been treating those injured in the July movement with utmost priority over the past nine months. This incident has deeply saddened us,’ he said.

He noted that one of the four had received treatment abroad and had been readmitted to the hospital just two days prior.

Among the people injured during July-August mass uprising, the hospital currently has 55 patients under treatment. Of them, 46 are deemed well enough to be discharged, while only seven to eight still require ongoing care.

However, many patients are reportedly reluctant to leave, possibly due to feeling safer under hospital supervision.

The victims — severely injured during mass uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024 — have repeatedly alleged that despite government promises, they have not received adequate medical support or rehabilitation.
