Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, labour wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, held a demonstration and protest rally on Saturday morning opposing the government’s move to hand over operational control of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chattogram Port to a foreign company.

The demonstration began with a procession from the Chittagong Port Authority High School ground and ended in front of the port building.

The demonstration was followed by a protest rally presided over by Chattogram Port Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal assistant secretary Mojaher Hossain Shawkat.

At the rally, labour leaders warned that such a decision fell outside the jurisdiction of the interim government and called for the immediate suspension of the process.

Speaking at the rally, BNP Chattogram city member secretary Nazimur Rahman said, ‘The New Mooring Container Terminal is operating efficiently and that handing it over to foreign operators based on misinformation is unacceptable.’

An interim government has no mandate to hand over national assets to foreign entities, he added.

Nazimur also claimed that protesters voicing concern over the issue were facing harassment.

He also urged the workers not to take the law into their own hands.

The other speakers at the rally included the Chattogram city BNP joint convener, MA Aziz, Chattogram port Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal publicity and publication secretary Md Humayun Kabir.
