A group of people at an event in the capital’s Shahbagh area on Saturday demanded that chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus should be made the president of the country.

The event, March for Yunus, which the participants said organised jointly by different groups formed to uphold the spirit of the July-August mass uprising, also demanded to form a national government comprising all the political parties.

Alamin Atia, the member secretary of Agrashan Birodhi Andolon, said that the president’s power should be expanded by amending the constitution and chief adviser Yunus should be made the country’s president, if necessary.

‘A national government should be formed with participation from all political parties and by removing controversial advisers from the interim government,’ he said.

Their demands also include reforming the country’s constitution, completing the trial of the leaders and activists of the ousted Awami

League who were involved in the 2024 July–August massacre, and giving Muhammad Yunus a five-year term.

They also demanded the resignation of president Mohammed Shahabuddin and alleged that Shahabuddin had association with the ousted Awami League and was involved in the July–August massacre.
