
Tension ran high as leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its front organisations on Friday morning demonstrated in Jashore town carrying the coffin of Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal leader Tariqul Islam.
Tariqul was allegedly shot and hacked to death on Thursday evening.
The Krishak Dal leader was laid to rest in his family graveyard on Friday evening after his namaz-e-janaza held at Dhopadi High School ground after asr prayers.
Tariqul Islam, 43, president of the Nawapara municipality unit of Krishak Dal, farmers’ wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and also a resident of Dhopadi area under the municipality, was allegedly shot and hacked to death at a fish enclosure at Dahar Mashihati of Sundali union council under Abhaynagar upazila on Thursday evening.
Abdul Alim, officer-in-charge of Abhaynagar police told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Tariqul was killed at around 6:40pm on Thursday over a feud over the ownership of a fish enclosure.
‘No case was lodged and none was detained in this regard,’ the OC said on Friday afternoon, adding, ‘The police are investigating the incident.’
Selim Reza, vice-president of the Nawapara municipality unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party accused one Pintu and his supporters of committing the murder after calling the victim over the mobile phone.
The National Democratic Front, meanwhile, in a statement claimed that about 20 houses were set ablaze after the death of the Khishak Dal leader.
The party demanded exemplary punishment for the killers and those who torched the houses.
