
Many streets in the capital Dhaka went under water on Thursday morning due to moderate rainfall, causing traffic congestion in different areas and sufferings to the city dwellers.
Residents said that streets at Kathalbagan, New Market, Dhanmondi and Farmgate, and Jhigatola Post Office Road and Green Road went under water, causing sufferings to pedestrians and commuters, including school and office goers on the last working day of the week.
In addition to the rainfall, rallies on different roads, including those at Shahbagh and Kakrail, multiplied the sufferings of the city people as vehicular movements on the roads remained halted for hours.
Md Razzak, a shopkeeper at Lucky Hotel Lane at Kathalbagan, said that it was usual experiences for the residents at the lane to wade knee-deep water to reach their destinations during and after rainfall.
AKM Nazmul Hoque, a meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded from 6:00am till 12:00pm in Dhaka.
He mentioned that this amount of rainfall was typical for the monsoon season and there was less possibilities of rainfall throughout the day in Dhaka city.
He also mentioned that 33 millimetres of rainfall were recorded from 6:00am on Wednesday to 6:00am on Thursday in the city.
Rickshaw pullers Md Shariyatulla and Rafiqul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they struggled to pull rickshaws as the roads at Kathalbagan and Farmgate went under knee-deep water.
Another meteorologist of the BMD, Omar Faruq, said that 20 millimetres of rainfall were categorised as moderate rainfall and the amount of rainfall in Dhaka was usually high in the month of July.
‘We recorded 100 millimetres to 300 millimetres of rainfall in July in previous years,’ said Faruq.
Regarding the water stagnation due to moderate rainfall in the city, Dhaka South City Corporation administrator Md Shahjahan Mia said that the cleaning process of drains and canals was in progress.
‘We started the cleaning process in April and it is yet to be completed. We expect that the cleaning would be completed by the end of May or in the middle of June,’ said Shahjahan.
